Even though you may not be a medical biller, it is worthwhile to be knowledgeable about  the largest healthcare insurer in the United States – Medicare. The majority of this information below and the information for the Medicare Quizzes is provided by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Medicare Learning Network® .

Although this short video, “What is Medicare“, seems to be addressing physicians, it contains useful information for everyone. This video will provide you with a high-level overview of the Medicare Program. It includes basic information about Medicare’s various parts and whom it covers. This program is produced by the Medicare Learning Network®.

Next is a listing of common Medicare Acronyms from A to Z. This will open as a pdf file. It was compiled by CMS.gov and the Medicare Learning Network®. Following the list of acronyms (pages 1-17), there are definitions for many of the acronyms that go all the way to page 119.

For information purposes only, below is a sample of the paper form that is used to bill Medicare. By far, the majority of Medicare claims are billed electronically, but taking a look at this form will provide you with knowledge about what type of information is required for billing Medicare. Electronic billing is required, except for a few exceptions. “Initial claims for payment under Medicare must be submitted electronically unless a health care professional or supplier qualifies for a waiver or exception from the Administrative Simplification Compliance Act (ASCA) requirement for electronic submission of claims”, according to CMS.  Once you get to the website, click on the CMS 1500 link.  The form will open as a pdf.
