Referred Outpatients Records

10 Electronic Referred Outpatient Medical Records

Referred Outpatients are patients who are referred to the hospital by their physician for testing.  They come in on a prearranged date and at a prearranged time and have the tests performed, then are released home.  They are not inpatients, but they are registered and given a medical record number.  The report of their tests is sent to the referring physician.  An additional copy is also kept at the hospital.

Many referred outpatients come to the hospital for radiology testing. Examples of common outpatient procedures are: ultrasonography, radioisotope (nuclear) scanning, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and angiography.

Endoscopies are another type of testing that often occurs for outpatients.  Examples of common endoscopies are: bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, gastroscopy and cystoscopy, as well as many others.
